“Mareil please! Let me find you.”The hunters' voice, a soft boy's, called. Mareil stepped out of her hiding place. A boy in Egyptian clothing and all his hair shaved except for a little knob of hair on his head stood smiling at her, a sweet smile. She shyly smiled back at him.
“As you wish Prince Ramses.” She curtsied.
“Pshaw. No need for “Prince”,” He mimicked her voice,” Call me Ramses.”He laughed, realizing his mimicking was no where near her sweet gentle voice.
“Ramses!” A lady called from the palace behind him.
“You can go Mareil. Thank you for playing.” Ramses said. The girl nodded. She glanced around and walked down a street, her sandals clapping on the stones. She stopped in front of a richly decorated house, raising her hand to knock. She hesitated. Wouldn't he think it strange of her, a Hebrew, knocking on his door? Besides that, she was only thirteen! She was considered an Egyptian since she was found by the queens nurse. Still she was treated harshly by anyone who knew, besides the queen and her nurse.
“Who’s that Paki?” A man asked looking out the window at the strange girl frozen in her place, her hand in the air ready to knock. A boy shrugged and got up to see who was there. He swung the door open and Mareil almost fell over in fright. Paki reached to grab her hand but missed. She fell over with a thud. Mareil started panting for air. Paki leaned down and grabbed her small white hand. Surprisingly, it was cold! What could be this cold on such a hot day in Egypt? Mareil jerked her hand away from him, and got up. She hesitated and then said:
“I'm Mareil. We met at the great celebration for Ra. I was just wondering if........”She looked around and saw the other man staring at her. Paki looked at him and motioned for him to leave the room. He left but Mareil still looked uncomfortable.”Can I come in?” She asked. Paki looked at her dazed and thought back to that day and that beautiful girl he had met. Could this be her? He had thought she wouldn't have survived the first plague when the Nile was turned to blood. She was so small and sickly. How could she survive? Suddenly he came back to earth.
“Uh.. yes you may.”He said.”Take a seat.”She came into the house and sat down.
“Do you.......”She paused as if gathering courage to say something.”do you know I'm a Hebrew?”She finally said. Paki's face showed bewilderment as if he had finally figured out a life long secret. He slowly nodded. How could this be? She looks too much like an Egyptian. He thought.
“I always thought you were, but you look too much like an Egyptian for anyone to find out except me. I'm very particular with faces and things like that. I could feel you were a Hebrew. Your way to shifty to be an Egyptian.” Paki sighed.
Mareil nodded. “I could tell you knew. Thank you.”She got up and reached for the door. She swung it open and ran out. Paki stood in the doorway staring after her.
